Don't Lie To Yourself: Looks Really Do Matter A Lot

By Hayley Matthews

ugly-awkward-meeting Personality is only going to get you so far.

Conventional wisdom tells us that singles should always "dress to impress" when going on a first date. After all, looks and first impressions are supposed to make or break one's chances of making a lifelong connection — or so the thinking goes.

But if responses to a recent survey are to be believed, conventional wisdom is about to be turned upside down.

In surprising new findings by DatingAdvice.com, only 1 in 10 Americans ranked "looks" as the top quality they search for in a partner. In fact, the respondents rated several other qualities as more important than looks, such as things in common (50%), a sense of humor (25%) and morality (12%).

The exclusive study, which surveyed 1,080 adults over the course of three weeks, also found that men are twice as likely as women to put looks first, and that young adults are two times more likely than seniors to put looks as the number one quality.

Gary Lewandowski Jr., Chair of the Department of Psychology at Monmouth University, said only 1 in 10 Americans ranking appearance first is surprising and suggests people are uneasy when answering survey questions about dating, sex and relationships.

"What people say they'll do is often different from what they actually do," he said. "There is research that shows for picking partners, people often say things other than attractiveness matter, but when researchers tracked who people selected to date, it was largely based on attractiveness."What's ironic, according to Lewandowski, is that those other traits are far more important to long-term compatatabiliy.

How does personality affect appearance?

We consulted past research, as well as Dr. Lewandowski, Dr. Wendy Walsh, CNN's relationship expert, and Julie Spira, best-selling author and dating coach, to see how people really feel and if they're lying to save face.

Lewandowski, who spends his days researching this type of phenomenon, said our findings are supported by his own research, which shows how a good personality affects a person's attractiveness.

He refers to this as "the malleability of opposite-sex physical attractiveness" and said it is an integral part of how our brain interprets attractiveness.

Over time, the looks of another individual are greatly influenced by what we think of their personality.

"If you're of average physical attractiveness, but I find out we're similar, you will essentially get more attractive," he said. "It goes the other way, too. If you start out attractive but have a terrible personality, you become less attractive."

Research from the University of Texas and Time also analyzed preferences in human mate selection.

These studies show the characteristics that are most desired among men and women include honesty, consideration, affection, dependability, intelligence, kindness, understanding and someone who is loyal and a good companion.

These all focus on personality traits as opposed to cosmetic ones.

Is this pointing to a recent shift in our culture?

Walsh made some assessments of society's perception of attractiveness and the role the media plays in altering that perception.

"This research speaks to a kind of progression that I've seen in our culture where our media is obsessed with youth, beauty and good looks to the point that every photograph and every piece of advertising is Photoshopped, and I think that people in their relationship lives have realized how cartoon-like that is," she said.

So do looks still matter?

While over time, it seems a person's attractiveness can be improved or ruined by their personality, first impressions still matter.

With our modern online dating culture, Spira knows firsthand how important looks are.

"I think [people are] always going to say that they want somebody they have a lot in common with [and] with a sense of humor, but when we look at the profiles together and we do our initial matchmaking searches, [they say] 'I don't like the way he looks,' 'Oh, he's got bad hair' [or] 'Oh, he's overweight.'"

These initial reactions are not the whole story, though. Spira said eventually people "walk away if they see that they don't have enough in common or they just aren't intellectually stimulated" by another person.

Looks just aren't enough to sustain a relationship.

What's the likelihood respondents are lying?

OkCupid recently published a blog post titled "We Experiment on Human Beings!" Within this article, two of their most important experiments are discussed: "Love is Blind (or Should Be)" and "So What's a Picture Worth?"

Experiment 1: Removing pictures from online profiles

In the first experiment, the dating site removed profile pictures for one day. Without these photos to base decisions off, people responded to first messages 44 percent more often, conversations went deeper and contact details were exchanged more quickly than on a typical Tuesday.

However, when pictures were restored and appearances once again came into play, the 2,200 people in the middle of conversations found their chats dropping.

Experiment 2: How much does your image affect your attractiveness?

The latter experiment focused on users' rankings of other profiles. Noticing looks ratings often correlated with personality ratings, the OkCupid team replaced the two scales with just one and ran a test.

A small sample of users had their profile text hidden half of the time they were shown in match results. This generated scores given for picture and text and just the picture.

The results found the text is less than 10 percent of what people thought of others — it's all about the picture and appearances.

The experts' opinions

Walsh said "men and women tend to lie on surveys having to do with sex, love and relationships because they feel they may be judged."

Lewandowski followed this line of thinking, suggesting "people are just giving socially desirable responses. They know they care about those things but also know it makes them look bad."

Based on her experience as a dating coach and matchmaker, Spira said "there's a disconnect between what people look for online and what they say they want offline."

"I think that everybody needs to sort of jump out of their comfort zone and stop being so superficial about what someone looks like and give good people a chance," she said.

What the results boil down to is this: Only 11 percent of Americans say looks is the number one quality they look for in a partner, but that doesn't mean they're telling the truth.

What else did we learn?

1) Men are twice as likely as women to put looks first. Other interesting findings from our survey show 15 percent of men and only 8 percent of women list looks as the most important trait. Why is that? Biology.

The University of Texas study found while participants put those aforementioned qualities first, men favor physical appearance because it's a sign of youth and good health, and therefore reproductive capacity. On the other hand, women tend to focus less on appearances and more on ability to provide.

A study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology also showed men reject and report less attraction toward potential mates with low physical attractiveness. Women, more than men, indicate similar aversion toward those with low social status.

Walsh said, "cross-cultural studies in 37 countries show that men pick beauty and youth before anything else when they're choosing a partner."

Spira agreed, saying, "At the end of the day, a woman wants to be with a guy who can be a good provider and protector, and a guy wants to be with a woman who he finds physically attractive. That's what brings people together."

2) Young adults 2x as likely as seniors to say appearance is #1. Our study also shows 18 percent of adults aged 18 to 24 versus 9 percent of those 65 and older say looks is the most important quality in a partner.

According to Walsh, this is because age teaches us, "looks are false advertising about somebody's psychological ability to have a healthy relationship or not." She also discussed the biological factor that plays into these differences in opinion: fertility.

"As we age, our fertility years are behind us [and] our child rearing is behind us, we're looking for a good partner, a good friend... more than we're looking for someone that is super hot," she said.

Spira also recognized this, saying seniors "are really looking for companionship. They're not even necessarily looking for marriage. They're looking for someone to share times with, create memories with. They are not looking to have children, and... they're not looking for someone to have children that look a certain way. It's more about coupledom than just starting a family."

Once again, biological factors (i.e. fertility) have major influence on what we look for in a partner.

In conclusion, the variety of research we've presented ultimately shows people often say they want someone who is funny, virtuous and similar, but there are a lot of factors that come into play when push comes to shove, including honesty.

Katie Duguid also contributed to this piece.

"The most important sign of attraction is mutual eye contact," says Palmer, who is also a spokesperson for the American Psychological Association. "This is a brief glance, initially. It is not a stare, because staring is hostile." If a woman glances at a guy and he notices, he'll probably glance back. In turn, the woman will probably look again, and if he's interested, he'll look again. This repeated volleying of eye contact is an indication of mutual interest and can lead to more body signals.

From the first stage of relationships—passion—there is a progression towards what relationship experts consider the second and third levels of being a couple—emotional intimacy and commitment. "That passionate part really only lasts a maximum of two and a half years, if people are in continuous contact," says Palmer. This stage relies heavily on nonverbal attraction. Emotional intimacy can develop very early on, but that's "what can grow and keep partners attracted to each other."

After initial eye contact, if two people are attracted to each other, one or both people will engage in "preening" behaviors—they will touch a part of their body that accentuates what they think is particularly sexually attractive, says Palmer. A woman might throw back her shoulders, lick her lips or touch her legs. A man may straighten his tie, stand with his hips jutted forward or put his fingers through his belt loops. "These kinds of initial, nonverbal gestures occur at a less than conscious level, not in a manipulated or conscious way." Preening behaviors, however, are noticeable to the person on the observing end. Witnessing these behaviors could be an indication that this person is attracted to you. You may also become aware of the attractive physical features that they are "preening."

Around the same time that preening behaviors are occurring, mirrored actions may appear between a pair, reaffirming mutual attraction. "If one crosses his legs, the other will cross her legs. It is an additional body language that says 'I'm interested in you,'" according to Palmer. At this point, both players become aware of their behavior and ask, "Should we go to the next level?"

With the number of colognes, perfumes (thank you Britney and P. Diddy), deodorants and body lotions available on the market, you would think fragrance was the number one determinant of sex appeal and relationship success. Maybe, but probably not, says science. Pheromones, chemicals that travel through the olfactory system to the brain, can trigger either a biological or behavioral response, and may account for changes in libido. But this does not necessarily provide an explanation as to why you find one person more appealing than another. "There is some research that says pheromones could play a part in attraction, but it's more complex than that. It's usually sight," that triggers attraction, says Palmer. And often, people are attracted to the stereotypical standards of beauty, she says.

What Women Really Think ... Of Dating Someone Who's Sober

woman drinking wine Dealbreaker or the perfect match? Here's what 9 ladies think.

As someone who drinks more than she should and is well aware that there just might be a problem here, I have tried more than a few times to get sober. I don't mean just for a few weeks, but it never works out. Alcohol is my crutch and I know that. I've gotten a far as a few months, and while I'm proud of that achievement, I can't be too proud, because I still drink, and I still love it.

Because I am a drinker, I've often wondered if I could be in a relationship with someone who doesn't drink at all. I have several friends who are sober and they're just as awesome off the sauce as they were when they were on it, but I also feel like certain events are reserved for them and others reserved for my drinking buddies. Which makes sense; friends do get divvied up into specific categories depending on their interests.

I asked both sober and drinking ladies their thoughts on dating someone whose drinking habits (or non-drinking habits) are completely different from their own. Here's what they had to say.

How The Drinkers Feel:
"I could never date a sober person. It's just like someone refusing to partake in one of my favorite hobbies!" exclaims Rachel, 21.

"I married a sober person and it's perfect since forever. I always have a designated driver," says Joy, 37.

"Whether they drink a lot, a little or not at all doesn't bother me. As long as they don't care that I may have a couple, we'll get along just fine," says Jen, 36.

"I'd be apprehensive but I don't know that it's a dealbreaker," says Sarah, 26.

"For me, dating someone who doesn't drink is like dating someone who votes Republican. It just won't work," says Leigh, 27.

"As someone that enjoys drinking, I probably feel most comfortable either with someone that drinks a similar amount, or a sober person that is VERY patient and still fun around drunkies. Nothing is worse than the sober person that is constantly judging you, and it's also no fun to have to take care of someone that is stupidly drunk ALL THE TIME (making me the responsible party by default)," says Becky, 29.

How The Sober Ladies Feel:
"As someone sober, I've been fine with being with drinkers so long as it's not constant and excessive, and so long as it's kept out of my home. I have some wine around for cooking, but it has taken me a long time to get to that point. What makes me really uncomfortable is when people who know about it bring over bottles of wine or liquor when they come over for an evening." says Tanya, 34.

"My husband and I are both sober; before we met each other, we hadn't dated anyone else who was sober. But a guy broke up with me once because I had stopped drinking, I lost friends when I stopped drinking, and it made me sad, because I'm way more fun now than I was when I was drunk," says Randi, 35.

"I've worked extremely hard at my sobriety. It's been six years in the making. But since I know I have a problem, I know that dating someone who drinks would be an issue. If they occasionally had a glass of wine with dinner, that would be OK, but more than that, I just couldn't do it. I need to put myself first for this one," says Kim, 30.

Does he really like me or is he just sticking around?

Love and Relationship Advice Forum

Here are points all in order:
-He is my biggest crush from church.
-We've both grown to mutually like each other over the past year, and started "talking" this year.
-This year has been pretty rocky between us. This year was also the year we finally hung out outside of church.
- our first hangout was at his house, and we made out. He mentioned sex, I declined. 2nd time at his house, things got really physical, foreplay...but never ever gave in for sex.
-I told him before that I will never have casual sex with him.
- During that 2nd time at his house, we were kissing and I brought up.."why arnt you mine?" While kissing him. It was time for me to go home, so he said that we had to go but continued to kiss me.
-Later on that night he says,"to answer your question, I need to focus on me. I have anger issues. I get tempted by other females." (I think he was letting me down easy)
-FASTFORWARD: my mom is the mom to want to be "comfortable" w/whoever I surround myself with. So she wanted me to invite him over, which I did..but always made excuses not to come over. Telling me that he was shy.
-My mom had enough of it, and contacted his mom saying that if he respects me, he would come over before I go back over his. He calls my mom to apologize if she ever felt like she was being disrespected. Since then, he has invited himself over(but those days I was really busy). And if I were to ask him to come over, it wouldn't be such a big deal now, like it was before. Not to mention he also says from time to time"tell your mom I said hi".
-It was actually my 3rd time, breaking it off with him. I told him that we both deserve someone better. He agreed, but believed that there was no one better and that I was "perfect" for him.
-he's made Instagram posts saying that he needs a book to understand females.
- I tried to break it off with him by telling him that I was interested in someone else, his response..."you are mine forever. Please. I don't what to lose you."
i think anger issue is something either to be resolved early on or stay away from because it can cost you much energy and frustration later.
Having sex on your first few dates is not recommended unless sex is the reason that got you into hanging out (which is not the case for you). You told him in advance that you want no casual sex, but it seems that he didn't hear you. It's your birthright to say no when your heart says no. if he doesn't respect you, it's his issue not yours. you have no obligation to hang out with him if you would not like to.
Also, thought you may benefit from these dating tips, such as #8-10, 94 (they are free but you need to sign up first).

Really Want A Valentine's Day Date? Rent One!

valentines day date Rent a Gent ships everywhere. Yes, we said SHIPS. Seven women reveal what they'd do with a man-on-demand from the new site Rent a Gent.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's time to decide exactly how you're going to spend the big day. If you're in a relationship, you'll probably do the whole dinner thing, after your main squeeze gives you flowers and the customary heart-shaped box of chocolate. Don't you just love predictability? But if you're single, and wishing and hoping (read: dying) to have a man in your life for Valentine's Day, then we have an idea for you: rent one. That's right; pay a man to give you the time of day.

But where, oh where, does one go to rent a man? Craigslist? Hell no. Do you want to end up chopped into tiny bits that are tossed in the river?

More from YourTango: Dealbreakers: 7 Ways To Kill A First Date Before It Even Starts

If you're in the market to get a guy to, well, hang around you, then you should hit up the one-stop shopping site of Rent a Gent. And when I say, "one-stop shopping," I mean it, because that's exactly what you can get when you browse through the relatively small crop of guys who have a myriad of talents. For example, Sam The Artist can teach you a language, dance for you, cook for you (he's a self-proclaimed chef), and, of all things, philosophize with you all for the bargain price of $300 an hour! He also, based on his photos, has a penchant for the color purple. I deduce this to mean he'll recite some Alice Walker to you while showing you his mad martial arts skills, because, yeah, he's apparently a master at that, too. Intrigued yet?

It seems that no matter what your needs, Rent a Gent has a man for the job: dates, handymen, butlers, bodyguards, dog trainers, personal trainers, poets and strippers. And yes, ladies, Tommy The Mentor is both a poet and a stripper. I told you this is one-stop shopping!

We asked a few ladies what they would rent a guy for, reminding them that this is NOT an escort service and sexy time isn't part of the package.

"I would hire him to clean my house," said Colleen. "That's about it."

She wasn't alone in looking for some help for everyday stuff, because Cassie was thinking pretty much the same thing. "Dishes! Painting my nails, carrying the groceries, taking out the recycling... shall I go on?"

I mean, what else are you supposed to do with a guy you can't have sex with? Although it was pointed out more than a few times, that no one was interested in paying for sex even if it was an option.

Jen, who's pregnant and about to pop any day now went into a bevy things she'd hire a "gent" to do: "SO. MANY. IDEAS. He could push my stroller while I trot around in ultra-high heels (he also has to change diapers). He could just give me foot massages while I work. Public compliments. Like, I send him on a Starbucks run, but he's required to say, 'I need an iced mocha for my queen,' and then when I get the coffee, the barista needs to have written 'Queen' on it. Anti-personal-trainer: He comes to the gym with me, but just stands nearby, telling me I don't really need to exercise and should probably just relax so he can feed me strawberries. Could I just watch him do pushups in my living room? That's not weird or anything."

Less useful, but perhaps even better ways to get the best bang for your buck came from Sarah who wants him to "tickle my back for hours. He's not allowed to say one f*cking word," and Julia, who liked Jen's idea of demanding compliments from him, but also thought framing him for a murder she might want to commit would be the best way to truly use his, um, assets. Because we all know chef/martial artist/poet/dancer Sam The Artist up there would be a perfect patsy.

Alle, on the other hand, found the entire concept to be flawed. "Why not just hire a handyman? Could I pay a gent to keep philosophers away from me?" she asked, before pointing out that she can take care of herself. "I can't think of a single reason to just hire some dude." Personally, I can't either, but can you?

While it may be flawed, as Alle said, because, well, a handyman is going to be way cheaper, perhaps, for some of you, you'll want a cutie-patutie around your place on Valentine's Day. Isn't that what Valentine's Day is about? Spending money on pretty things that make you feel less alone? And the best part is, Rent a Gent ships everywhere: "We can ship to virtually any address in the world. Note that there are restrictions on some products, and some products cannot be shipped to certain destinations."

As for returns? "You may return most new, unopened items within 15 days of delivery for a full refund." If there are any other products on this site besides men, I've failed to notice them, therefore making this return policy even creepier. You know, because the shipping policy wasn't weird enough.

So, ladies, are you down? Will you be renting a gent this Valentine's Day or any other day in the coming months? If you're a "true go-getter woman" who's "smart and busy" with a full social calendar then, according to CEO and Co-Founder Sara Shikhman, you deserve "the lifestyle that has been enjoyed by men for centuries." Wait, what?! That's another topic for another day. Until then go forth, you go-getters, and get, er, rent your man today!

Please help, really confused...

Hi there,

I'll explain my situation really fast, I'll go into details later:

I've been in love with this girl for 6 months now, even broke up with my 10 year girlfriend for her, or sort of for her anyway...
I tried asking her out, it didn't work. I should point out, I'm French, and over here in rural France, dating is a little different... We don't ask girls out, for example, it's just not done... Don't ask me why, that's the way it is I guess.
She's extremely shy and extremely nice, 6 years my junior (I'm 31), and I keep thinking her behavior shows that she likes me, but then I get nothing.

She's incapable, I know, of making the first step, problem is I'm also extremely shy... But last week, I asked her if she was available to work on a project for our dance group that we were supposed to do together. She said sure, and invited me to her house. Of course, I was over the moon, I never expected that. She didn't have to, it came as a massive surpirse and yet she did. She knows perfectly well how I feel about her (you'd have to be blind not to see it) and she still invites me to her house!
Well anyway, I went there, we spent an amazing 5 hours talking about the project and other things. As I was leaving her house, I said "there's still something I want to tel you, but you already know what that is, don't you?" She changed the subject rapidly and repeatedly, to meaningless stuff. She was embarrassed, I know. She even told me she was so ill at ease she would turn into an ostrich (she was burying her head in her sweater collar).

But I still got no answer. I left, and I was so bummed out I decided to text her, and told her exactly how I felt (yes, the L word), saying I was sorry to embarrass her, asking her to please tell me something, a big fat no if it was her answer, or even a "I don't know" would have sufficed, if it was easier for her by text, Hell I don't know. She answered "Very embarrassed, yes... I'm gonna turn into a real ostrich. See you soon, bye!"

Now what the Hell does that mean? Yes? No? I don't know? What?

I'm crazy about this girl, and I think she's just confused and there's a small part of her that doesn't want to say no, but she's scared of something. Maybe me, maybe her past, maybe her future, her present situation, I don't know...

What do you guys think?

What Women Really Think ... Of Your Sports Obsession

sports obsessed guys "If a guy is into sports, I'm not into them. I just consider it an incompatibility." Dealbreaker or entertaining? Ladies dish on dating sports-obsessed fellas.

This time of year has us inundated with sports. Before baseball season comes to an end, football is in full swing with people sitting themselves in front of the TV right after (or even during) Thanksgiving dinner to watch it. Then Christmas day is, for some, devoted to not just food and family, but the NBA, too. Next up is the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day and then, of course, the highlight of the calendar year for many, whether it's because of the commercials or the actual game, the Super Bowl. It's a busy season for sports lovers, and it just happens to coincide with some major holidays.

Not to make gender stereotypes, but men do seem more likely to be the crazy, fanatical sports types. As the holiday seasons draws to a close, we asked women their thoughts on the sports guys in their life, especially during the holidays. Is it something with which just to deal, but draw the line at throwing things at the TV? Or are sports games off limits during holiday family time — no matter how much their guy throws a tantrum over the decision?

More from YourTango: Party Time: How To Make Your New Year's Eve Makeup Last All Night

It comes down to compatibility.
"I have never been involved with a sports fan, ever. My husband will watch the Super Bowl but mostly for the guy bussing food that comes with the party," says Caleigh, 29.

"If a guy is into sports, I'm not into them. I just consider it an incompatibility," says Amanda, 25.

"I've never dated a sports fan, and I don’t think I ever will. I just don’t think I’d have anything in common with someone whose life revolves around games. If it's a beautiful Sunday for a hike and he NEEDS to be in front of the TV for a Pats game, then forget it. He's missing out on life, so no thanks," says Joanna, 34.

Sometimes it's entertaining for us.
"It's nice because it consumes his day and let’s me do what I want to do – which usually involves me laughing at him from the other room," says Catherine, 26.

"I find it entertaining as I feed bag them and watch them puff up like they know what 'they should have done.' Beer guts 'n pride," says Missy, 35.

But then there is just dealing with it, of course.
"Accept it and deal. Although, I will say I don't think they'd easily put up with something women are equally as in to," says Hannah, 27.

"It's not necessarily a good or bad thing. I guess I wouldn't mind if I'm in a relationship with him. I would simply see it as part of who he is and I should love and accept him for that, right?" says Monika, 26.

However, there are sports fan ladies, and they're awesome.
"I like sports and love to watch my guy get excited about whatever he's watching. I've been known to shout and swear at football and hockey games myself," says Jennifer, 34.

is he playing a game or does he really like me?

Love and Relationship Advice Forum

There's a guy from a studentclub that I've met about 3 months ago. He constantly flirts with every girl at the bar (usually 15 girls in 1 night or so), but he never flirts with me; he just tries to piss me off. In the beginning he even tried to set me up with another guy from the club, but later he took the keys to my bike, so I couldn't cycle home anymore and had to sleep at his place (at 8:30 am I didn't care anymore). I knew for sure that he wouldn't make a move and was fairly sure he just saw me as a friend, so I didn't mind. When we woke up, he had to go to his parents house and invited me to come along, ofcourse I didn't since we were just friends.
A couple weeks later I got a bit too drunk and he brought me back to his place, while he went back to the bar again. Later when he got back, I had to go home, but he kept asking me if I didn't want to stay for a couple more hours, but he was drunk so I didn't think much of it.
A week later he sent me a fb message (never did that before) to ask if I'd also go to the last party of the year with the studentclub. Ofcourse I did, but I told him that a friend of mine couldn't come to which he responded: as long as you're there then I'm happy. I wasn't sure if he was just trying to freak me out or if he was serious. Later that night he was again flirting with every girl in the bar, including 2 friends of mine that I had brought with me. I had warned them about him since he is a player (with every girl, except for me). Later I talked with him about the flirting and he told me that he was actually looking for a serious relationship. He then said: "I'm only extra nice to a girl when I really like her. That's also why I gave you the extra blanket and asked you if you wanted to borrow a pj last week". Btw that was after his 4th or 5th bottle of champagne so I doubt he remembers it and that's why I haven't talked with him about it.

I'm wondering if he really likes me or if he is just playing a game. My friends at the club keep warning me that I should stay away from him and I'm sure there's a reason for it (he is a player). He also knows that he's one of the very few guys that I still trust (got a ty time behind me and the guys from the club all know what happened and helped me a lot), so if it'd just be a game to him then he'd be the biggest in the world.
Not sure if it matters, but he's 25 and I'm 20

Hey there,
There are 2 ways, you can see it. 1 he is a player and you will end up getting hurt.
Or 2. he just haven't found the right one. The best way to play it is to not let it go physical, and try to talk when both of you are sober. Take it very slow.
I'd say he isnt that into you. if a guy is really into you he doesnt want to share. they may want other girls but they dont want you with other guys so he wouldnt have tried to set you up with his other friend

I really love this girl...plz help :)

Love and Relationship Advice Forum

Ok so i love a girl...but whats weird about it is......
I used to play an online game, there i met a player who i later came to know is a girl.I started talking to her and soon we were friends(in-game).She asked for my fb id and then we used to talk daily on fb.One day she started sending stupid messages(she was drunk :P) and later told me about his ex(that idiot left her because he started liking someone else). That day i kind of started liking her.I asked for her number which she gave after a month though we didnt talk much on phone. We used to flirt and it was fun.Though i started liking her.I even told her.She was like am i serious?...I told yea but den we didnt talk for two three days.I didnt messaged her as i was scared that i lost her.But after two days she herself messag
ed me that why did i stop texting her..We used to talk and flirt and it was fun.
But one day she tells me that she went to meet her ex as he wanted to meet her...I was angry actually not angry but sad and drunk...I asked if she still loves him and she told yes.I told her that i love her and some stupid things, actually a lot of stupid things(i was drunk )...After that she didnt say anything, neither did I.
I cried like a kid for 2-3 days.I was badly hurt and wanted to talk to her but i just cant.I think i spoiled it.I want to talk to her but i know she wont pickup my phone so i have planned to go to her place. She lives in some other city. But its not that easy.I will have to lie to mom and dad, bunk school,go to some new place, find her(i dont know her full address but i know the area where she lives),convince her to meet me and make her realise that i really love her and i am ready to risk it all because i really do love her...I want to know just one thing...what should i say to her?
No. Just no.

Serously, stop right now. Do not go to her city. That stuff works in movies, in reality, it leaves you stranded in a strange city.

It is an adventure though, so if you like that stuff, have at it.

Just no you won't get the girl. and if you do, you won't want her.

Take it from a guy that's played out that scenario already.

But i love her. This is the first time i am serious about a girl.I cant let her go.
I know am not a hero from a hollywood movie who will go their, sing a song and the girl is mine. But i want to let her know that i really love her and even if she does not love me today,i will wait for her.

What Women Really Think … Of Your Teeth

shane MacGowan "In 2013, there's no excuse for having bad teeth." Photo: lastfm.com Are bad teeth a dealbreaker? Do women even notice? Ladies get real about teeth.

It's about this time every year that the song "Fairytale of New York," by The Pogues, one of the best Christmas songs of all time, shows up in my Facebook and Twitter feeds at least a few times a day. Holidays aside, The Pogues, an Irish band formed in the early 80s, is not only known for its lead singer, Shane MacGowan, but also for Shane's teeth. His teeth, if you can even call them that, are legendary (Google "bad teeth" and his chompers show up more than once), are the type of thing that make people cry, and cry a lot. Although he's since gotten dentures, MacGowan's former teeth are just as famous as his Christmas ode to New York City.

So with the thought of wonky mouths on the brain, I thought this week I'd ask ladies their thoughts on teeth. Are perfectly straight pearly whites a necessity? Or are crooked teeth somehow charming? What makes a sexy mouth?

More from YourTango: 7 Best Wedding Apps On The Interwebs

With a photo of MacGowan to get everyone in the holiday mood, the conversation started.

Bring on the snaggle teeth!
"Slightly crooked is much more appealing than robot straight," says Brynn, 27.

"I have crooked teeth on my bottom row that my dentist never seemed to be concerned about, so I also grew up not being concerned about them. I've been told they're sexy, but I'm sure some people would be like yo girl, get braces. If anyone told me to get braces though, I'd give them the middle finger. I've honestly never even noticed a guy's teeth before, so I guess I just don't really care," says Sabrina, 27.

"Some of us dabble with the snaggle," says Melissa, 35.

"[My husband] has one crooked tooth that only shows up when he smiles a certain way. And I'm the only one who makes him smile that way. So. Yes. I lost track of what I was saying," says Colleen, 29.

As long as they're not "too" bad, all's good.
"I mean, there's such thing as teeth that are TOO jacked up, but generally I'm not a teeth snob ... like, as long as the smile shape is good?" asks Amanda, 25.

"I don't notice teeth unless they're particularly disgusting ... like the teeth of that guy [Shane MacGowan]," says Autumn, 24.

"His teeth don't have to be perfect, but obviously should be taken care of," says Cassie, 25.

But then there are those who want your teeth to sparkle, at least a wee bit.
"I'm picky about teeth. I can't get it up for teeth that are too small or jack-o-lantern-like with spaces in between. They don't need to be perfect but certain teeth really turn me off," says Amelia, 34.

"I'm really skeptical of guys with bad teeth. If they can't step it up enough to take care of their teeth, then what does that say about the rest of their hygiene?" asks Patricia, 30.

As for meth mouth?
"When I see a mouth full of bad teeth, all I can think about is how much that mouth smells like sh*t, and all the rotting that's constantly going on. In 2013, there's no excuse for having bad teeth — meth or not, but especially not" says Jennie, 32.

What Women Really Think … Of Your Shoes

What Women Really Think … Of Your Shoes Loafers? "Only for work or weddings. Fun socks, red socks, or no socks,"- Kia, 31. GQ.com Converse? Sperrys? Flip-flops? Here's how the ladies really feel about your kicks.

Once again we did that lovely crowd-sourcing technique to get input on how ladies really feel about your kicks. Originally, we polled about Converse, Sperrys, loafers and flip-flops. However, the women who participated took it a step further and really went to town on EVERYTHING.

So, sit tight, gentlemen. It's going to be a bumpy ride. But, just for the record, those five-toe shoes and Crocs aren't winning points anywhere. Although we didn't ask about them specifically, there was a huge resounding NO to them in any situation.

First, let's address any shoe that exposes toes (flip-flops in particular), shall we?
flips

"No flip flops, or sandals in general, unless he is walking from a car to the beach. Aside from that, all good," says Meghan, 29.

"Stupid, ugly Adidas sandals and the like that look like they should only be worn in the shower, are unacceptable always," says Jen, 35.

The token male voice of the group (because that's what happens when you poll on social media sometimes), Sean, 34, had to say, "Flip-Flops belong at the pool and/or sauna and that's it. F*ck flip-flops in public. As I personally identify as a male, my input is irrelevant, but I JUST HATE FLIP-FLOPS SO MUCH."

"Mandal! No never, never!" says Jessica, 28.

"Men in sandals gross me out. It makes me want to vomit a bit. I don't want to look at their bare feet. A little sexist, but who really cares," says Autumn, 24.

"For flip-flops, only Rainbows or Haviannah (or the like)," says Kelsey, 32.

"Sandals should never be worn by men who are not on holiday in the tropics. Also, I am a firm believer in men getting pedicures, which for some reason, most of them won't get… and that's...okay. But you can give yourself one! And then when you do put on flip-flops to go to the corner, you won't gross us out so much. Because face it, men's feet are pretty gross. So do it! Scrub your feet and trim those nails and pull that nasty sock fuzz out of the crevices! Treat yourself right!" says Lyndsay, 36.

Well then. Apparently, dudes have ugly feet, and women feel very, VERY strongly about this.

But what about Converse, aka Chucks? Personally, I love Chucks, but that's just me.converse

"Great … if they wore them when they were kids. And they aren't too clean." says Kelsey, 32.

"Old Chucks over boat shoes any day, even when boaters were cool 4 years ago." says Andi, 35.

Not quite Chucks, but we did get this response:

"Vans rule on both men and ladies," says Sarah, 33.

So, now what about Sperrys, or boat shoes in general?
sperry

"Once upon a time boat shoes all the way, but those have somehow been tarnished over the past few years. Maybe I only like boat shoes with jean shorts and deep V-neck tees," says Liz, 31.

"No boat shoes unless you're on a goddamned boat," says Alle, 29.

"Douche [men in boat shoes] unless they truly are East Coasters. Or they are over 40…" says Kelsey, 32.

Despite the hot photo of Ewan McGregor in loafers sans socks, we didn't get much feedback except that, apparently, only Ewan can pull off such a look. But we did get some input on the sole thickness of loafers, which was interesting. ewan

"As long as the sole isn't thick, spongy and black. Cute with Jeans. Only for work or weddings. Fun socks, red socks, or no socks," says Kia, 31.

"Loafers (like Ewan's there) are the jam with thicker soles and a modern tongue that ends closer to the ankle than the toes," says Andi, 35.

"Loafers are necessary. If you are a business man who must wear a suit. Bummer for you," says Lyndsay, 36.

But what about boots? Keep in mind, despite his head was cropped, we used a photo of Ryan Gosling in boots to ask this question:ewan

"I love a man who can pull off some hot boots!" says Raquel, 25

"Only if you're chopping wood!" says Kia, 31.

And although they weren't on the immediate list, my sister put in her two cents about dress shoes:
"I hate those black so-called dress shoes! The toe part always looks so long! Actually men's black shoes in general are lame...unless they are Chucks!” says Jennifer, 33. I guess one could say that both my sister and I consider Chucks to be "formal" wear.

The lesson we've learned? Not to be cliché, but different strokes, for different folks. Although, as I stated above, the five-toed things are a big no-no forever, and if you're a guy who wants to expose your toes, you need to back it up with a pedicure. Well then. There you go, gentlemen!

What Guys Really Think...When You Approach Them

Flirting: What Guys Really Think When You Approach Them One guy's response? "Hell yeah!" Here's what men think about you making the first unofficial move.

Welcome to 'What Guys Really Think...", our new column devoted to polling real men about what's going on inside their noggins when women speak, act or even dress in various ways.

For women living in the 21st century, it's totally normal to be a go-getter and approach that cutie eyeing you from across the bar. If he's cute, why not, right?

More from YourTango: The Top Summer Dating Tips For All You Single Ladies

Well, it's not always the case. And sometimes, it takes a lot to muster up the courage to go up to him out of the blue.

After polling every honest guy I know, I was surprised to find that there were an array of preferences when it comes to what men expect. They weren't all as stuck in the 1950s as I had thought (though, unfortunately, some still were).

Instead, as I'm pleasantly surprised to report, there were plenty of men who agreed that a woman making the first unofficial move and approaching a guy at a bar isn't only a welcomed change — it's downright sexy.

They Think It's A Turn-On:

"I'm always impressed when a girl has the balls to approach me at the bar," says Cole, 29. "It's never easy to approach anyone when you're out, so when I see a woman doing it, it’s a big turn on. It shows that she’s confident in herself."

"I find it really attractive when a girl comes up to be out of the blue at a bar. If she can hold a decent conversation, it's even better."

Some Guys Think It's Too Intimidating:

"It's not that a girl can't approach me while we're out — but I find it a little intimidating when she comes up to me. It takes me awhile to get up the courage to go and talk to a girl, so if she approaches me, I'm a little put off my game," says Ryan, 23.

"I'm a pretty confident guy and sometimes it's a little hard for me to get used to the thought of a girl coming up to me first. The last thing I want to do is get stuck talking to a girl that I’m not interested — I hate wasting her time (and mine, too)," said Matthew.

It's Sexy:

"It's sexy when a girl has enough confidence to approach a guy — and she gets bonus points right from the get-go," says Tyler, 27.

"I am incredibly attracted to strong, confident women so I think that any woman that can come and talk to me is definitely a woman I want to get to know. Not be corny, but if she's willing to make the first move here, I wonder what else she's willing to make the first move on," says Phil, 28.

It's More Fun:

"Guys shouldn't have to do all the work when it comes to meeting a girl and approaching her. I think it’s really awesome when the roles are reversed and I can be approached by girls. Let them see how nerve-wracking it is!" says James, 25.

"If a girl wants to talk to me, she should come and talk to me. She shouldn't wait for me to make the first move. It might not seem like it, but guys love to play hard to get, too," says Mike, 24.

What Guys Really Think Of Texting

dating: what guys think of texting In reality, this guy has zero intentions of dating you. He texts you without fail, but he never asks you out on a date. So what's the deal?

Texting has become a popular way to communicate among singles. People like it because it's a quick means of communicating details, and men usually prefer texting because it's easy to stay in touch without much effort. Texting is also a fun way to banter without picking up the phone. That's the upside.

The downside is when women mistake a man's frequent texting for real interest in them. So many of my dating coaching clients end up in these lengthy, enjoyable texting "relationships," thinking they are building a real connection with a man. Sadly, that is usually not the case.

More from YourTango: Why Ranting Online About Your Divorce Ruins Your Chance At Love

[Take this survey to tell us how technology affects your dating life, and enter for a chance to win a $100 AMEX gift card!]

The Four Types Of Texters To Beware

1. The Womanizing Texter. He's not ready to be exclusive, but seeks female attention. For this guy, texting is the perfect way to keep you—a woman—at arm's length. In this case, texting is his low commitment way to stay in touch. In fact, a man can actually be texting several women on a regular basis. It helps him feel more desirable and like a hot commodity. Texting provides a great ego boost as the arrival tone alerts everyone in hearing distance of his popularity.

2. The Cheating Texter. He seems to be romantically interested in you ... even though he's in a relationship. Many experts refer to such relationships as emotional cheating: when a man who has a wife or live-in girlfriend creates an emotionally close bond with another woman via texting. This way, he isn't physically cheating, just flirting with other women. Obviously, you wouldn't want your man engaging other women this way.

3. The Needy Texter. This guy might text you all day. He wants your attention and needs your help. He'll either appeal to your nurturing side or just text little things all day to stay in touch. At first it might be fun, but it can wear you down and become pretty darn annoying, especially when you'd prefer a face-to-face date. Keep reading...
