There's probably nothing worse than being the only single person in a room full of couples who are in love, cuddling and making kissy faces at each other. (Ugh.) And these animals feel your pain. Almost in protest, they're butting in and making things awkward for couples everywhere.

Awkward and new situation

Love and Relationship Advice Forum

Hello everyone this is my first post in this place and i hope your answers will really help me. So how do I start... I met a guy on facebook from Belgium almost 2 years ago but never spoked too much but now that i started comeing in Belgium in holiday to my grandmother we started seeing each other along with his best friend that i also know from facebook. They are friends of my cousin so that;s how i met them. So now i'm in holiday in Belgium and i have been going out with these guys but just one of them is single. I have never thinked about that before i just thought of them like some good friends. Last saturday was the birthday of one of these guys, i am not makeing no racist commentaries but he is black and i am white; and we both ended up being a little drunk so we started kissing and all that but we haven't went any further. Next day when we met just the 2 of us we acted like nothing happend like it was an accident because we were drunk but we are having a lot of fun together and we get along very very well. He is a really nice guy. So last night we've been to a big party but before the party this guy promised to his best friend that he won't kiss me that night because he didn't wanted to feel awkward alone, and he kinda ignored me for the night but around 4-5 in the morning we started talking again a lot and his friend went home leaving us alone. We stood on a bench like for 2-3 hours talking about stuff and i was so tired that i putted my head over his shoulder and he started huging me, and after some time he kissed me. Then both of us looked so confused and we started talking about what we feel about each other and he said that: he really likes me that i'm his type of girl, that at the moment he doesn't want any relationship but if i was liveing in Belgium we would've been together and all this kind stuff like i'm beautifull and that he doesn't mind that he is shorter with less than 1 inch than me if that is not a problem for me and all that.... and he 'really wanted to know what i was feeling for him; and because i was really really tired and i have a lot of problems saying my feelings i don't know why i started crying when he told me that he is sad that i;m leaving back home on friday.... and the thing is that i really like him and he is the first guy i really like and i told him that and he said that it's really really cute that i tried to express my feeling to him....
So i am sorry for this long post but i don't know if he said all those words just to make me feel better or he really meant them. Next year i am moving here and we will be in the same city but i don't know how things will be until then... and he didn't said a word about a distance realationship. I said sorry for started crying today and that it happened because i was very tired not because i'm in love with him or i am very sensible or something.
Sorry for my english i tried my best i'm not native....So i am waiting for every king of opinion from you guys. Thank you

I'm sorry for what's happening to you. The same thing happened to me recently and I didn't know what to think or say.The problem is that ,when you just have met a new guy,you don't really know what they are thinking;it's like coded messages ,because we all are afraid to appear stupid or to say the wrong thing ,or even worse to reveal our true feelings. So , just take it easy;you don't know this guy yet.Just relax and get to know him first and see if you really like him.True ,it's not easy in a long distance relationship ( believe me ,I know! I'm in one myself) but it can be done.Actually ,first try to figure what he wants. But you don't want to scare him off either by asking too direct questions.I have been trying to figure it out myself and I found few books to help me understand guys better.I have been reading this great book that helped me quite a bit. Here ,I'll send you the info.Meanwhile ,try to take it one step at a time.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Now i left Belgium i am back home and i already miss him... i'm gonna take things easy to be friends and not talk too much about the future and makeing plans and all that one step at a time

Well, That Was an Awkward Reunion

Ben and I were the first ones to arrive at Luke and Marni’s Memorial Day barbecue.

“We come bearing rosé, mayo-free potato salad, and cupcakes,” I announced. “I made the potato salad. Ben made the cupcakes.”

Marni gave our offerings a once-over.

“Is that peanut butter frosting?” she asked.

“It is,” Ben said proudly.

Marni sighed. “Clearly I can’t go on a tirade about how I never see you guys anymore now. I’m eating one of those cupcakes before they’re gone.”

“So who all is coming today?” I asked.

“What she really means is, how many of her exes will be in attendance?” Ben teased. I elbowed him in the ribs.

Marni confirmed that Mike and Ed would both be in attendance, as well as Jane, David and Milo. I let her know that Jenna and Candy would be arriving at some point.

Ben and I got drinks – rosé for me and a beer for him – and headed outside to say hi to Luke. He was at his usual spot next to the grill, Olivia sitting on the picnic table next to him, chatting away. As we were catching up, out walked Mike, Ed, and an extremely tall, impossibly stunning woman. Ed, who was leading the pack, saw me and briefly hesitated before walking over.

“Hey Luke,” he said, giving Luke a pat on the back. “Hi, K.”

“Hi Ed. Hi Mike.” I turned to the woman. “Hi. I’m K.”

“That’s my fiancé,” Ed said. “Debbie.”

“Ed,” she said in a British accent. “I’m perfectly capable of introducing myself. Hello, K. Nice to meet you.” She turned to Ben. “And you are?”

“Ben. K.’s boyfriend.”

Ed pretended he had never met Ben before. Mike, to his credit, acted like a normal human being. Debbie, it turns out, is a former model (Ed made sure to point that out) turned fashion editor. Given the fact that Ed’s ex-wife could be a Megan Fox impersonator and his fiancé looks like she belongs in a lingerie catalog, I'm starting to think that maybe we didn’t work out because I’m too normal looking. Not that I’m complaining. I wouldn’t trade Ben for anyone, let alone a weirdo like Ed.

Jane, David and Milo arrived shortly thereafter. Milo settled in with Olivia, and Jane and I caught up while David chatted with Ben. Jenna and Candy showed up about a half-hour later, and shortly after they arrived, Debbie approached our group.

“Candace?” she asked, a look of surprise on her face. “Is that you?”

Candy looked panicked. “Uh, hi Debbie,” she said. She quickly introduced Debbie to the group, and after some awkward small talk, Debbie went back to Ed, who had been casting worried glances on our group ever since she’d left him to come talk to Candy.

“How do you know her?” Jenna asked.

“We knew each other in college,” Candy said. It was very clearly not the whole story, but her firm tone said she wouldn’t be discussing it further.

On the way out, Ben and I tossed around theories. Sorority enemies? Former lovers? (Me: Ew Ben, don’t say “lovers.”) Drug runners? Nothing really seemed plausible, so we gave up. I’m sure Jenna will tell me. If Candy ever tells her. Color me intrigued.

Hmm, How to Handle This Awkward Friend Moment?

Ben and I met up with Ursula and Mitchell at a Mexican bar/restaurant last night for Cinco de Mayo, and while it started out fun, it ended weird.

I was the last to arrive. Ursula was wearing a sombrero and shaking maracas, of course, and Ben and Mitchell were watching her in amusement.

“Doing your part to perpetuate the stereotype of the ethnically-insensitive American, I see,” I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek. Everyone laughed.

“I think it’s a good look for me, to tell you the truth,” she said. “I’m workin’ it.”

“Ursula is the only person who looks at herself through beer goggles,” Mitchell said with a smile.

“Touché,” Ursula said. “Wait, how do you say ‘touché’ in Spanish?”

We laughed, and Ursula and I sat down at the booth. Ben ordered a margarita for me, a second for him and Mitchell, and a third for Ursula.

“How about some food?” I suggested.

We ordered a bunch of appetizers, and then Ursula announced she was going to the bathroom.

“Come with me, K.,” she said.

I dutifully followed her, and when we got into the bathroom, she gave me a long, somewhat painful hug.

“I’m so happy for you guys!” she exclaimed. “He kept asking me for advice, and I didn’t know what to tell him. I wish I had known about the ring. It all would have made so much sense if I’d known that. You should have told me!”

“Thanks so much,” I said. “I didn’t want you to get stuck in the middle, though. It would have been sticky if Ben had really changed his mind.”

“I guess,” she said.

Over the next couple of hours, we had some drinks, chatted and laughed. Then the mood suddenly changed, when Ursula decided to order a fourth margarita.

“Four?” Mitchell asked. “Really, Ursula? You have to work in the morning.”

“Yes, Mitchell, I am having a fourth margarita. I’m a grown woman. You don’t have to like my decisions, but you do have to respect them.”

“Decisions often have consequences, Ursula,” Mitchell said. “Just sayin’.”

Clearly Mitchell and Ursula weren’t talking about having a fourth margarita anymore. The mood got tense and stayed that way, and Ben and I decided to leave shortly thereafter.

“Do you know what that was all about?” I asked on the way back to his place.

“I have no idea,” he said. “And I’m not sure I want to know.”
