As someone who's lived in New York City for almost 10 years, I've been around the block when it comes to dating. Although the majority of my dates have been in dark bars somewhere in the Lower East Side (that's what you get when you date poor artists), there were some dates I've had that evoked that fleeting feeling of, "Wow. I want this moment to last forever." And then forever was over 90 minutes later.

While the city and its suburbs have a lot of great places to offer during the day, the best part about NYC is just how much more fun things become once the lights go out.

Here are New York City's most romantic summer date spots, whether you're on your first date or your thirtieth.

1. Frying Pan
Hudson River Park at W. 26th Street (by Pier 66)

Right on the Hudson, the Frying Pan is one of the hottest places in the city right now. Once a sunken 1929 lightship, the Pan has been resurrected into one of the West Side's more exciting dive bars. From the gorgeous sunsets over the Hudson, to the eclectic crowd once it gets dark (like couple swing dancing to no music behind you), this lively boat is definitely a place to check out. Romantic Rivalries

Mitchell’s going away party was at the club where he hosts his monthly comedy show. They had shows going on all night, but they closed the bar area to the public. When I showed up around 9:30, the party had been going for hours, and there were tons of people there. I scanned the crowd for Ben and Ursula, and found them sitting in a booth with Caroline and Sandy. Ugh, Sandy.

“Hey everyone,” I said as I approached. Caroline smiled and waved hello. Ursula and Ben, who were on the outside, got up to give me a hug, and a hug and kiss, respectively, and Sandy, who was seated next to Ben (of course she was) gave me a fake smile that looked like it was causing her pain. I scanned the immediate area for a chair, and didn’t see one.

“Sandy, let’s go say hi to Neil,” Caroline suggested. Sandy gave Ben a lingering look, and then got up and walked away with Caroline.

“She really is unbelievable,” Ursula said after Sandy was out of earshot, shaking her head incredulously. I laughed, and Ben turned red, which was either embarrassment or alcohol, or a combination of both.

“I’m going to go get a drink,” Ben said. “Can I get you ladies anything?”

We gave Ben our drink orders, and he left to fetch them.

“Have you talked to Mitchell?” I asked.

“We made some painful small talk when I got here,” she said. “I was going to head out shortly after that, but I haven’t seen any of these people since we broke up, besides you and Ben, and it’s been kind of nice. It sucks. I lost all of the friends in the breakup.”

“Not all of them,” I pointed out. “Plus, with Mitchell gone, you can totally steal them all back.”

“Ha! True. I’m trying to figure out how I can steal Caroline without getting Sandy in the deal.”

Neil came over to say hello, and we invited him to join us.

“I was really sorry to hear about you and Mitchell,” he said to Ursula. “How are you holding up?”

“I’m hanging in there,” she said.

I quickly began feeling like the third wheel, as Neil had his attention focused solely on Ursula. When he said how much he missed seeing her all the time, and suggested they make plans to hang out, I excused myself and set off in search of Ben. I found him at the bar, doing shots with Mitchell.

“K.!” Mitchell exclaimed, giving me a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Do a shot with us! Tad – another round of shots for me and Ben, and one for the lady.”

Ben looked back in the direction of our booth, and smiled.

“Mitchell,” he said, elbowing him in the ribs, and nodding toward the booth. “Check it out.”

Mitchell looked over at Ursula and Neil, who appeared to be deep in conversation. He threw his head back and laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

“Neil told me a million years ago that if Ursula and I ever broke up, he was going to date her. He said that I couldn’t get mad about it because he was warning me in advance.”

“It doesn’t bother you?”

“Neil doesn’t have a chance.”

The night was long, sloppy and fun. Around 2:00am, I hit the wall and decided to go home. Ben insisted on going with me, even though I tried to convince him to stay out. We went back to his place and crashed, and when we woke up this morning, we each had the same text from Ursula.

“In hindsight, going home with Mitchell was probably a really bad idea.”

Yikes!
