6 Valuable Lessons From Dating Mr. Wrong

6 Valuable Lessons From Bad Relationships What have you learned from "Mr. Never (Ever) Again"? When it comes to pretty boys … don't. Just, don't.

We've all had some horrible first dates. But what about terrible relationships? If you're feeling alone in your quest to find "Mr. Right," take a look at some lessons that our readers have learned from "Mr. Never (Ever) Again."

Now, an ode to all of the losers that we've dated and the key takeaways from these mistakes:

1. Mr. Big Spender
Beware of the guy that overdoes the "grand gesture." While sure, a dozen roses make most women swoon … several dozen? Seems like overkill.

Single mother Shari began to notice a pattern developing in her relationship with her fiancĂ© last year. After the two met on Match, she quickly fell in love with his extravagance. "The whole time we were together he was always doing things in such abundance," she said. "If he sent flowers, he sent six dozen, if he gave me a bag it was a Louis Vuitton." Soon enough, she realized that what he overcompensated for materialistically, he lacked emotionally.

"As soon as he presented the ring, it was as if he owned me," Shari said, "and when he messed up, he just bought me more things, but none of them were enough to keep me happy." She broke things off shortly after, and plans on taking her time before settling down with someone again.

Lesson learned? If your man tends to show off, make sure he isn't doing it to distract you from his true (and in Shari's case, possessive) colors.

2. Mr. "You've Got This One, Right?"
While yes, it's the 21st century and there's nothing wrong with going Dutch on your dinner bill, there is definitely something to be said about the commitment level (or lack there of) of a guy who can't step up and treat you every once in a while. Kim spent three years dating someone that she now describes as "the cheapest guy on the planet."

"When it came to dinner dates, movie tickets, you name it, I paid for it. Occasionally we would split it, but that was rare too," she said. Last year on the Fourth of July, Kim realized that she would never be happy settling for a freeloader. "I bought us tickets to the Yankee game, even though I had been upset for weeks prior about how cheap he was all the time," Kim said.  "On the day of the game, I was miserable, because I paid for everything — surprise, surprise. I came home crying, only for my Mom to tell me that she slipped him $50 that morning and told him to 'Take care of me for the day'." [Yes, you read that correctly. Kim's ex pocketed her mother's sympathy money.]

Lesson learned?  "Never date anyone who's cheap — it's literally the most unattractive quality a person can have."

3. Mr. Too Much Too Soon
You know those instantaneous butterfly feelings that grow in the pit of your stomach when that person walks into the room? Well, Jordyn dishes on why you shouldn't let them override your common sense.

"I dated Ben through my job. We had become really close friends, and since we worked 80-hour weeks, we spent virtually no time with anyone aside from the people we worked with," Jordyn said. Soon long office hours turned into post-office drinks and the two began texting on the reg when they weren't at work. "We instantly became permanent fixtures in each other's lives in the matter of a few weeks, and our relationship escalated as quickly as our friendship did," she continued. "We were seriously dating and keeping it a secret from all of our co-workers, and he dropped the L-bomb only a couple of weeks later." The two met each other's parents and spent long weekends together, only for the relationship to fizzle out as fast as it started, when they realized that they hardly even knew each other.

Lesson learned? Consider your relationship your biggest investment. Would you drop all of your savings into a stock that you haven't thoroughly researched? Probably not. Your heart is a prize, and you want to make sure that whoever wins it, is worth it.

4. Mr. Pen Pal
You know this guy. He's funny, charming, and an all around catch … according to your IPhone. James fills us in on how a virtual relationship doesn't always translate into the real deal.

James met Joseph on a dating app, and was thrilled to find that he liked him even more when they finally met in person. Drinks turned into a four-hour dinner and dinner turned into a walk through the park. "We went on three or four great dates, but while the texts were still coming in, the dates were falling through." Every time that James brought up going out again, Joseph became distant and vague, always steering the conversation away from any actual plans. James's frustration began to escalate because he didn't see the point of constant communication with zero delivery. "We would text all day, every day. At first I enjoyed the attention," he said, "but after weeks of not seeing each other, I grew tired and bored." Eventually, the texts grew fewer and farther in between, and James's coworkers got tired of trying to decipher the meaning behind every received emoji. "After three weeks of incessant texting, I finally gave up," James said.

Lesson learned? Be wary of the allusive texter — odds are, he won't measure up in real life. Keep Reading ...

10 Valuable Lessons From Terrible First Dates

First Date From Hell One lesson? If he shows up drunk, just go home. We've all been there. Now, here are the unexpected takeaways.

The best part about dating is that horrifying dates are inevitable. If you're shaking your head and wondering what's so "best," about that statement, then maybe you're the type who's never learned a lesson from a truly disastrous date. Bad dates are for learning, you guys.

We took to social media to see what people had learned after first dates from hell. It's hard to tell what's scarier from the stories we received: the dates, or the actual lessons the men and women were forced to learn. We'll let you be the judge.

1. Agreeing To A Health Food Restaurant For A First Date Won't End Well.
Emily probably should have known better when a date suggested that they meet at the healthiest of health food restaurants in town. However, the reality of the situation didn’t sink in until after she ordered a creamy dressing at the restaurant, and her date said, "Ugh. That's gross. Creamy dressing is sick. Sickening. Nasty. Oh man, I feel like I'm going to barf." Then he tightly grabbed her arm, looked her right in the face and said, "Look, pretty girl — don't ever let me catch you eating mayonnaise." Emily picked up her bag and snuck out the back door with the stealth of Batman.

Lesson? "Don't go out with guys who schedule first dates at healthy restaurants. Have a drink. Relax. Eat some mayonnaise, if you like."

2. Computer Programmers Have A Weird Sense Of Humor
If the bottom of the email after your first date reads the following, then you know you've got a desperate attempt at both funny and love on your hands. Can we say awkward?

"This program uses a novel algorithm to quantitatively analyze and assess characteristics of Jessica--------'s male suitors (includes real-time objective quantitative data on charisma and personality, goals-set/goals-attained ratios, penis size [and associated wielding skills], potential for a happy and successful future, probability of divorce, various dating statistics among 768 other int value data inputs).

The compiled algorithm yields object [name] of Jessica's best match, saving much valuable time and opening up a world of unprecedented happiness."

Lesson? "When the talk goes to his penis — he also claimed in another email that followed that he was well-endowed — block him on gmail, then laugh at him with your friends."

3. Vampires Aren't As Cool As They Are In The Movies
The idea of gifts, in general, is great! But when your date asks if he can buy you a pair of fangs before you even meet him IRL, something is up. However, if you ignore this blaring warning, as Diana did and, to quote her, "get stupid and go out with him anyway, because he's THAT good looking, don’t be surprised when he tells you he thinks he's a vampire, and that he thinks you're one, too." Sigh.

Lesson? "No matter how good looking he is, just say 'no' to dudes who think they’re starring in The Lost Boys."

4. Never, Ever Date A Local Yokel Celebrity
Colleen thought the local weatherman seemed rather charming when he asked her out. But that's where the charm ended. She explains, "The aura of 'I am a local celebrity so you should be impressed' is palpable. Also, he used weather terminology in bed. 'Expect heavy precipitation in my Southern Hemisphere'?? I wish I was making that up."

Lesson? "Celebrities, big and small, are all delusional." And on that note ...

5. ...Don't Date Former Disney Stars. Ever.
Honestly, if we look at former Disney stars, there's a lot of wonky going on there. A shouldn't have agreed to be set up with this particular star when her friend suggested a double date, but he was famous so it could be fun, she thought. The former teen heartthrob spent the entire evening either snorting coke or trying to score more coke — the ENTIRE evening.

Lesson? "If someone tries to set you up with a former child star, JUST SAY NO, no matter how good his hair is." Keep Reading ...

5 Timeless Love Lessons From Spring Break

Spring Break "What happens over Spring Break, stays over Spring Break." From hook-ups to relationships, here's what I've learned about dating from crazy Spring Breaks past.

Spring Break. It's the one time you're allowed — and actually, expected to — make mistakes.

Which is funny, because in college, you spent endless hours cramming for final exams, trying to earn an "A" from impossible-to-please professors, dealing with the terrifying notion that you'll eventually go on to graduate ... maybe not this semester or the semester next, but eventually, and that means real life, which leaves less wiggle room for mistakes. It's about dedicating one week away from worrying about all of these real, everyday stresses, and letting loose, margarita in hand.

More from YourTango: Is Lack Of Sleep Getting In The Way Of Your Relationship?

While those days are long gone, there's a lot we can learn from them.

It's — in a lot of ways— like dating. Being on Spring Break is about having fun, being flirty and if you're lucky, hooking up with that cute stranger you met at the bonfire.

So I'll save you the airfare (not to mention, the monster hangover) and share some advice on love you would otherwise learn the hard way from your trip to Cabo, Miami, South Padre Island … or wherever else you wished you were partying this year.

1. Do Not Drink More Than Your Date.
A girlfriend of mine learned this the hard way. On a girls' night out at the local night club, she said yes to drink after drink from guy after guy. This led to us finding her totally sloshed on the floor of the girl's bathroom. We were grateful if only for the fact that we were the ones who found her (and not one of the club creepers who had been hitting on her all night). We spent the rest of the night carrying her over our shoulders, stumbling in our heels because we were basically dragging her down the sidewalk. The next morning, she had a major hangover and the rest of us had no numbers. Talk about a buzz kill.

2. There Are Plenty Of Fish In The (Warm, Tropical) Sea.
I think every woman has that one friend who just can't stand the idea of being single in life (so think of her as the Taylor Swift in your life). Or maybe, you are that friend. My friend — we'll just call her Katie — was that friend for me. She was constantly caught up in her dreams of pursuing her "Mrs. Degree" in college. (And always prompted me to joke, "So, you're pay $40,000 a year for a boyfriend? Most expensive dating service ever.") It didn't stop at school either. Katie brought that mentality with her over Spring Break and when we met up with her brother's friend, she was totally head over heels for him in half a minute. They flirted, even had a DFMO (dance floor make out session), but she groveled for his attention and she whined when he didn't text her back after the trip was over. It was something I had seen her done since I had met her freshman year. She was so caught up in finding "The One" with this guy, that I really don't think she was having as much fun as the rest of us. Too bad she wasn't noticing all the other guys (ahem, fishes) flirting with her or maybe she might actually have the boyfriend she so desperately wanted by now. Keep reading ...
