Serious dating a girl for a few months. Everything seems to be amazing and moving towards a solid, healthy relationship.Every now and then she gets very worked up about her job. She recently graduated college, got a job, then moved across the country for a different job and really regrets it (leaving the job and moving away from her family). She says that she really messed up and will be pigeon-holed in this line of work, won't be able to go to gradschool due to money and lack of relevant experience, and that even her family holds it against her for moving away, and is basically screwed for life.
I try to console her -- "I don't need your pity."
I go over her (very impressive) accomplishments that will help her get to where she wants some day -- "Theres a million other people who've done way more than me."I'm also a recent grad so I know its terrifying starting out in the world on your own. But I just get nowhere when this comes up -- I know I can't solve it, but I wish I could make her feel better. I think she wishes I could make her feel better about it too...I just end up not knowing what to say, which she obviously doesn't like, or she gets angry because she disagrees with me trying to convince her things will work out someday. She's been able to comfort me during some tough times and I want to be able to do the same for her.
The frustrating thing is I really DO believe things will work out -- she has an impressive resume going for her. Money/student loans are probably the only things holding her back right now, which is understandable for a recent grad.
I can't solve her dilemma, but I want to be able to console her at least somewhat. You can't just ignore things that are important to her, or say apathetic things like "well that sucks," yet every time the issue comes up I feel like I fall short for her.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
