Body language

Love and Relationship Advice Forum

I bumped into an ex colleague on a night out. We worked in the same team but didn't really speak. I went up to him and he seemed happy to see me and picked me up and hugged me. We caught up about what we had both been up to the last few months. He kept kissing me on the cheeks, held my hand to go to the bar and put his arm around me while we played on the fruit machine. He said he would like to see me again. I know this sounds naive but was he interested?

Body Language 101: From A First Date To Meeting The Parents

a couple on a date Don't be shy — make eye contact! Don't stand with your arms crossed, don't touch your face, don't break eye contact, but what else?

Don't stand with your arms crossed, don't touch your face, don't break eye contact — when it comes to body language, we've all memorized these words of wisdom.

Whether you're embarking on a first date, going on an interview to land that dream job, or being forced to deal with your fear of public speaking at work, body language is an incredibly important factor in your success — or lack thereof. And according to body language expert Blake Eastman, the founder of Manhattan-based research and teaching organization the Nonverbal Group, not only are physical signals important, but on many levels, they're even more impactful than the words we say.

"These little slices of how you interact with other people are a big deal in your day-to-day life," Eastman says. "For example, your boss may not even realize it, but the whole reason they perceive you to be less valuable is because you’re expressing that you’re not confident."

According to Eastman, most of the hackneyed body language tips we've come to know are completely bogus, because they're so over-cited and over-used that they accomplish nothing but making you precisely what you don't want to be: completely average.

Body Language: The 5 Moves That Say He's Into You

Body Language: The Moves That Say He's Into You Does he lean in when speaking to you? He's totally falling for you! It's not about his words ... but his actions!

By Shannon Smith for POF.com

Do you ever wish you could gain some insight into the inner workings of a man's mind without him knowing it? Well, it turns out that with a few trick up your sleeve, you can! — and not in that creepy, Mel Gibson in What Women Want sort of way. It's all about body language, baby!

More from YourTango: The Secret To Having More Sex? Make More Money!

Body language experts say that only 7 percent of our communications originates from our words, while 55 percent is expressed with our body. The rest of our communications, roughly 38 percent, is derived from the tone of our voice.

So just when you thought you might be out of subtle queues, words left unsaid, and signs from the universe to painstakingly dissect, we're giving you more to work with! Clues in everyone's body language including (but not limited to) posture, eye contact and even how often someone touches their face can reveal whether they’re romantically interested in you or not.

Here are five body language signs to help you decode this language of love:

1. He touches his Face: A man who's interested in you will bring attention to his face by touching it at various times — and the same actually rings true for women as well. During your date he might run his fingers through his hair, touch his ears, rub his chin or lick his lips — these are all signs that he is attracted to you! One reason both men and woman touch their lips when they see an attractive person is because lips are an erogenous zone, so subconsciously it feels good to touch.

2. He raises his eyebrows: Social scientists say that when a man is excited, his eyes will become wider to take in more of his surroundings. When this happens, the eyebrows will rise and fall as the eyes attempt to get larger. If you're speaking with a man and he is attracted to you, look (casually) to see if his eyebrows rise and fall while speaking to you. Body language experts also suggest that men will also become increasingly animated when speaking to a woman they're attracted to. An exaggerated gesture is also a biological attempt to lure you in.

3. He plays with his drink: Does your man play with his drink while talking to you? Don’t worry, He's not bored. He's actually into you. Body language experts say that men who are sexually attracted to a woman might play with objects using their hands. For example, he might run his fingers around the rim of a glass or pull the label off of his beer. You might also notice him adjusting his clothes, like his collar or buttons. The more attracted he is, the more pronounced the fidgeting will become.

4. He leans into you: What happens when a man watches the final seconds of a close football game? He leans in off the couch. This biological move doesn't change when he is also attracted to you. Social scientists say men will lean into you and frequently point their feet towards you when they feel an attraction. He also won’t take his eyes off of you. If he makes great eye contact throughout the conversation, it's a sign he is interested.

5. He touches you: Even if a man is not the sensitive "touchy-feely" type, you may him subconsciously touching you throughout the evening. Even the shy guy will have a brush with your elbow, hand, or back, so keep an eye out for it. The challenge for any woman is determining whether it's accidental or on purpose. If it's on purpose, then the intentions are clear, but if it comes across as accidental, it could be his body language telling you something his mouth wouldn't dare reveal.

Reading body language

Just to let you know this was high school Junior year, and I just had a first semester class with her, and it was already over. For my first problem. Last year I asked this girl to prom that I really like, even though I have never talked to her except for the one time she asked me to barrow a pencil in the hall right before that class. Anyway she smiled when I walked up and started talking, but told me that she was sorry, and already going with someone. That someone was her cousin. I was kinda in disbelief. I at least know she told people about me asking because one of my friends asked me about what happened later that day. Since then when she sees me in the hall she would just look at the ground when walking by. I also assume that by asking her that basically told her that I liked her.

Anyways now it's senior year and summer has passed, and she is still doing it. We also have a class together now, and three of her friends are in it. She sits in the front row several people over from me. When class is over she walks to the back of the room, and just kinda slowly walks. I guess so I can leave first. Its like she's trying not to get near me. The one thing that was interesting today was that I was leaning over talking to a friend next to me, and I glanced up and I believe she was looking at me, and our eyes met for literally 2 seconds then we both just looked away. Found that interesting. I just really don't know what she is thinking. Is she just avoiding me because she is nervous around me now or just trying to prove she doesn't like me? I just don't know what I should do?

I haven't really talked to many girls in my four years of high school, and I just wonder how weird It is to start talking to them when I haven't really said much or anything to them before. Especially with her. Although I guess it wouldn't be to weird If I talk to the ones I have classes with. Not flirting with them, but just to help me with talking to girls, which I am not the best at.

Second thing that annoys me is. A lot of times her and her friends will be talking to one of my friends. It just seems like they talk about meaningless crap though from what little I have heard. From what little I have actually heard, he is just usually making fun of what they say in a sorta dumb serious, but sarcastic voice, and they laugh at it for some reason? (Also when I say friend I mean just someone I talk to regularly, but would probably never hang out with after school.)

Thanks for any advice, and sorry it's so long.
