Online Dating Made Easy For The Shy At Heart

ProConnect Subscribe to Experts Blog By Sandy Weiner

Online Dating Made Easy For The Shy At Heart Drop the wink face and ask a real question. If you're shy, don't just send winks and canned flirts. Get noticed by doing this instead...

Communicating with your online dating love interest can be confusing. Should women send first emails? (Absolutely!) What do you write in a first email? (More on that below.) What about flirts, winks, and smiley faces? Should you send or respond to them?

And what if you're shy? Making the first move can feel daunting. I received this email from a woman who's perplexed about online dating communication:

More from YourTango: Is It Ever OK To Have Sex With An Ex?

Dear Sandy,

How do you feel about winks, flirts, and other automatic ways of communicating in online dating? I am shy and find this to be a comfortable way to let a guy know I'm interested.

Bea

Dear Bea,

Flirts and winks and smiles — they're a quick and easy way to communicate with your e-match. Unfortunately, most men don’t respond to them. These canned responses are often viewed as lazy and impersonal.

It's okay that you're shy, but if you don't move a little out of your comfort zone in your online dating communication, you'll probably get ignored. So, how do you overcome your shyness? Try writing an email instead of a flirt. You can take all the time you need to compose a great email that will catch his interest. There's no pressure to be spontaneous or quick on your feet.

4 TIPS FOR WRITING EMAILS THAT GET NOTICED

MAKE IT PERSONAL. Pick out one item from his profile that grabbed your attention and include it in your email. I like to choose the most obscure thing he wrote. For example, if he writes that he's a doctor but has a secret desire to write a novel, ask him about that book. Then tell him that you get along well with creative men.WRITE A CLEVER SUBJECT LINE. He'll be more likely to open your email if you write something fun, smart, or unusual in your subject line. Make it pop. "Greek Isles on your bucket list, too?" or "Jumping on a Trampoline?" shows him that you read his profile and are commenting on something personal.ASK A GOOD QUESTION. One of the biggest mistakes people make is endng an email without asking a question. If you include a question at the end, he'll be more likely to respond. And no "yes or no" questions. For example, if a guy says he's an animal lover, don't ask, "Is that dog in the photo your favorite pet?" That will elicit a "yes" or "no" answer. Instead, ask "What was your favorite pet of all time and why?"DON'T SOUND NEEDY. Keep the tone casual, light, and fun in your first email. If you come on too strong, he might label you as needy or stalk-ish and not respond. This isn't a game show where you're shouting, "pick me, pick me!" I like to think of the first email as an exploration. You are an adventurer, out in the wilds of online dating, and you're trying to figure out if you're compatible or not. You are just as much the chooser as he is the picker. Don't lose sight of that.

I hope these tips make it easier for you to take that first step and send an email, not a flirt or wink. Best of luck in your dating adventures!

Wishing you success in love,

Sandy

Infatuation Vs. True Love: Use Your Heart & Mind

Infatuation Vs. True Love: Use Your Heart & Mind Is he the one or are you just obsessed with finding the one? Infatuation catches your eye while love catches your heart.

What is infatuation?

Infatuation is like an innocent fantasy that we imagine to be love. It's when we're in love with the idea of love. It starts at a young age with "puppy love" or a crush on someone and continues into adulthood. Infatuation tends to happen when we're not in tune with reality; we see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear. We read more into what he says and does, when his words, behaviors and actions speak otherwise.

More from YourTango: 7 Undeniable Signs He Loves You

Infatuation causes us to pay more attention to a man's superficial physical characteristics and less attention to his inner, deeper qualities. Almost all women have been or will be infatuated, confusing this with love or a deep like.

Don't let your eyes cloud your vision of love

Are you infatuated or in love? If you answer "yes" to the following questions, you're prone to infatuation. Do you...

Focus on external qualities (i.e. his looks, how much money he makes, the job he has, car he drives, house he lives in, etc.)?Become consumed by thoughts of him?Center your life around him by making him your priority?Believe what he says when your intuition is telling you otherwise?Have a superficial connection? Not see any flaws in him?Sit by the phone, waiting for his call?Pay for a lot of his meals and activities?Try to spent time where you think he may be, hoping to run into him?Let yourself be his option or afterthought?

Infatuation is fleeting and less fulfilling. If your relationship is based on infatuation, you'll compromise who you are, neglect what's important to you, and never feel like a priority in his life.

Open your heart to love

Being disappointed and discouraged when relationships based on infatuation don’t work out is understandable. Realize that there are always good lessons to be learned from these types of relationships. The overarching lesson is to let your heart choose who to love instead of letting your eyes choose.

Here's how to know if your relationship is based on real love. You bring out the best in each other. You're more happy than not. He treats you with love and respect. Your life is better because he's in it. There is no doubt; you just know he's the right person for you.

Have you ever been infatuated with someone? If so, how did you realize it and make the switch to love?

The Heart of the Matter

Ben spent the night at my place last night. He hadn't brought any clothes to change into, so he was up and out of the house before my alarm even went off. When I got up, Brad was at the kitchen table, a cup of coffee sitting next to his laptop. He was looking at an online dating profile. I looked over his shoulder. Short brown hair, big brown eyes...kind of Ginnifer Goodwin-esque.

"She's cute," I said. "You gonna write to her?"

"I went to high school with her," he said. "I'm trying to remember if I was a jerk to her or not."

"You probably were," I said with a yawn while I poured myself a cup of coffee.

"Where's Ben?"

"He had to go home before work and change."

"I totally heard you guys having sex last night," he said. "It was gross."

I thought back to the night before. We'd actually taken great pains to keep it down because we'd known Brad was home. The only noise we'd made was when I bumped my elbow on the wall and Ben and I had started laughing.

"Nope, you're lying. You didn't hear sex. The only thing you might have heard was me banging my elbow on the wall."

"And what were you doing when you banged your elbow?" he asked.

"Well, having sex."

"I rest my case. Can't you two be blissfully happy at Ben's place?"

"We usually are. We just happened to be hanging out in our neighborhood, so it didn't make sense to go all the way back there."

"Hey, are you going to L.A.?," he asked, changing the subject. "Tex said something to me about going the other day, and you hadn't mentioned it."

"No," I grumbled. "They're sending the new guy."

"Why are you so upset? Didn't you and Mandy use to switch off on trips?"

"Yeah, but he's new. And I did all the work."

Brad shook his head at me. "What's really bothering you?"

"What do you mean?" I shot back.

"K., I worked with you for a long time. You're a team player. You've never minded doing grunt work when you had to. So let me repeat my question: What's really bothering you?"

I didn't bother answering, because my answer was stupid. What's really bothering me is that I feel left out. I'm used to having friends where I work, and now that my trio of male coworkers are all drinking buddies, I'm on the outside, looking in. It's petty, I know, but it still bugs me.

When I got into work, Brad had emailed me, Tex and Meg.

To: K., Tex, Meg

From: Brad

Subject: Happy hour

Hey gang,

Remember when we used to have Friday happy hours? Yeah, me neither.

You. Me. Drinks. Friday. 6:00. The usual spot. You in?

Yours in thirst,

Brad

I smiled. That Brad? He's all right sometimes.
