Valentine's Day...With a Happy Ending

When I got to Ben's on Valentine's Day night, he had pulled out all the stops. Red tablecloth, candles, the good plates. And he handed me a bouquet of roses when I walked in.

"We said no gifts," I chided him after kissing him. We'd made each other promise, because we're going to New Zealand soon, and we really need to be saving our money.

"Flowers don't count as a gift," he said, then gave my wrap dress, red shoes and curled hair a once-over. "You look beautiful."

He didn't look so bad himself, in his dark jeans and pale blue crewneck sweater. While he put the finishing touches on dinner, I put the roses in a vase on the table, and opened the bottle of wine I'd brought to let it breathe.

"Can I do anything?" I asked. He stopped stirring, and walked over to me.

"Yes, you can pour yourself a glass of wine, and go chill out in the other room." He kissed the top of my head, and then went back to cooking. I did as I was told, and perused his CD collection until I found something slow and romantic-ish to play.

"Good choice," he said as he walked in. He was carrying a large salad bowl. "Time to eat."

We sat across from each other, and he served the salad.

"To the chef," I said, raising my glass.

"To celebrating Valentine's Day with the love of my life."

"You always have to one-up me, don't you?" I said, and we both laughed.

The rest of dinner was wonderful: steak, sautéed spinach and roasted mashed potatoes. For dessert, he'd bought red velvet cupcakes and a sweet dessert wine. After we ate, we slow-danced in his living room. I'm not normally one for cheesy romantic clichés, but this time I was too happy to complain.

We started kissing while we danced, and Ben started to lift me off the floor.

"Ben! Put me down. You're going to hurt yourself."

"K., I'm not even using my cane anymore. Besides, you're tiny."

He lifted me, gently, carried me into the bedroom, and laid me down on the bed. He settled in beside me, and while we kissed, he slowly moved his hand up my thigh, and stopped when he reached my garter belt.

"What is this?" he asked, surprised.

"Oh, just a little something I picked up," I said coyly.

"And you yelled at me for no gifts," he said. "That hardly seems fair."

A few seconds later, he realized I wasn't wearing any underwear.

"Now that's really not fair," he said. I couldn't see him in the dark, but I could tell he was grinning.

Even though we didn't go out and do anything exciting, I have to say that my Valentine's Day with Ben was the best one I've ever had. And I hope there are more where that came from.
