Hmm, How to Handle This Awkward Friend Moment?

Ben and I met up with Ursula and Mitchell at a Mexican bar/restaurant last night for Cinco de Mayo, and while it started out fun, it ended weird.

I was the last to arrive. Ursula was wearing a sombrero and shaking maracas, of course, and Ben and Mitchell were watching her in amusement.

“Doing your part to perpetuate the stereotype of the ethnically-insensitive American, I see,” I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek. Everyone laughed.

“I think it’s a good look for me, to tell you the truth,” she said. “I’m workin’ it.”

“Ursula is the only person who looks at herself through beer goggles,” Mitchell said with a smile.

“Touché,” Ursula said. “Wait, how do you say ‘touché’ in Spanish?”

We laughed, and Ursula and I sat down at the booth. Ben ordered a margarita for me, a second for him and Mitchell, and a third for Ursula.

“How about some food?” I suggested.

We ordered a bunch of appetizers, and then Ursula announced she was going to the bathroom.

“Come with me, K.,” she said.

I dutifully followed her, and when we got into the bathroom, she gave me a long, somewhat painful hug.

“I’m so happy for you guys!” she exclaimed. “He kept asking me for advice, and I didn’t know what to tell him. I wish I had known about the ring. It all would have made so much sense if I’d known that. You should have told me!”

“Thanks so much,” I said. “I didn’t want you to get stuck in the middle, though. It would have been sticky if Ben had really changed his mind.”

“I guess,” she said.

Over the next couple of hours, we had some drinks, chatted and laughed. Then the mood suddenly changed, when Ursula decided to order a fourth margarita.

“Four?” Mitchell asked. “Really, Ursula? You have to work in the morning.”

“Yes, Mitchell, I am having a fourth margarita. I’m a grown woman. You don’t have to like my decisions, but you do have to respect them.”

“Decisions often have consequences, Ursula,” Mitchell said. “Just sayin’.”

Clearly Mitchell and Ursula weren’t talking about having a fourth margarita anymore. The mood got tense and stayed that way, and Ben and I decided to leave shortly thereafter.

“Do you know what that was all about?” I asked on the way back to his place.

“I have no idea,” he said. “And I’m not sure I want to know.”
