My Congrats-You're-Engaged Dinner

“Sometimes?” Jenna repeated. “What a bizarre answer, considering.”

Jane concurred. She and Jenna had planned a “Congratulations, you’re engaged!” dinner for me, which was quickly becoming “Sorry you’re not engaged yet” dinner.

“I think he just got cold feet,” Jane continued. “I mean, getting engaged is a big deal anyway, but the two of you haven’t even talked about getting married. If you hadn’t seen the ring, you wouldn’t even be thinking about it right now.”

“Well, I would,” I said with a smirk. “Because Jenna has been telling me Ben’s going to propose for months now.”

“Sorry,” Jenna said sheepishly.

“He’s obviously going to propose,” Jane said. “It’s just a question of when.”

“What if he changed his mind?” I asked, saying it out loud for the first time.

“He didn’t,” Jenna said.

“He absolutely didn’t,” Jane added.

I wanted to believe them. Ben and I had had a wonderful vacation together. Amazing, even. If he had decided he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life with me while on that trip, I couldn’t figure out when. We hadn’t had any serious arguments, or tense moments. Everything was relaxed and fun. The fact remains, though, that he was, at some point, planning to propose to me, and he didn't do it.

“Maybe you should initiate a conversation,” Jenna suggested.

“She absolutely should not do that,” Jane argued.

“What kind of conversation?” I asked. Jane sighed.

“Just about the future,” Jenna explained. “Like, where your relationship is going.”

“Guys get freaked out by stuff like that,” Jane said.

Jenna shook her head. “Look, I know that it’s been years since I actually dated a guy. But I think Ben deserves a little more credit than that. He’s shown that he’s mature enough to handle grown-up situations and conversations. I will never understand why women coddle men the way they do.”

“You never coddled a man back in the day?” Jane asked.

“No.”

“Can we change the subject, please?” I pleaded. “I really want to hear what’s going on with you guys.”

Jane filled us in. Her freelance gig is over, and she’s looking for something new. David got a promotion at work, so they won’t have to worry about her loss of income for a while. And Milo has started what Jane describes as his “difficult phase,” which is making her irritable.

As for Jenna, business is going well, and she’s decided to give online dating another go. Jane, who is such a huge proponent of online dating that she should be the spokesperson for Match.com, gave her enthusiastic approval. Jenna didn’t say it, exactly, but I get the feeling that she’s looking for a distraction from Leslie, who is still dating Ben’s friend Neil.

In addition to finding the ring, another thing I wish I could take back is sending the email to everyone about finding the ring. I have a feeling I’m going to be having a lot of these conversations in the coming weeks. At least I didn’t tell my mother.
